Fastlane Fantasy Football (2017-18!)
Our league will reopen again very soon (August) and if you played last year, you get to reclaim your spot. We have removed one player for being a dick.
If you played last year and don't want to this year, please let me know as I'd like to shave down the league to 12 teams vs 14. 14 is just too much and it makes the waiver wires thin.
OR, we can have TWO LEAGUES -- perhaps the forum has grown enough so we can support 2, 12 team leagues.

Keyword Clustering: Best Resources, Techniques and Tools
What exactly is keyword clustering?
To cluster keywords means to group your long overwhelming keyword lists by relevancy.
I have done an article explaining keyword clustering in a most easy-to-understand way.
At the heart of it, keyword clustering is what it sounds like: you take relevant keywords and arrange them together into groups.
Use these keyword clusters to:
- Better understand your topic
- Optimize your content for several keyword phrases instead of one
- Discover more concepts and subtopics inside your niche
- Broaden your content to include more related terms and phrases
- Structure your content by turning related terms into subheadings
Before keyword clustering:
After keyword clustering:
Here’s how it helps:
Most importantly, keyword clustering helps to see concepts behind keyword strings.
Useful Keyword Clustering Resources
Goodbye Keyword Optimization: Welcome To The Age of Topical Optimization by Stoney deGeyter
Instead of optimizing your site for keywords and hoping to rank here and there, focus on building the site out to dominate a topic with multiple pages and blog posts.
Each page or post will target a tightly correlated group of keywords, but all built around a slightly broader topic. That gives you a chance to dominate a topic through multiple related pages, each focused on a specific visitor intent. That’s tough to beat.
Can SEOs Stop Worrying About Keywords and Just Focus on Topics? – Whiteboard Friday
by rand Fishkin
We’re going to take all the keyword phrases that we discovered… We’re going to group them by concept intents. Like “best days of the week” could include the keywords “best days of the week to fly,” “optimal day of week to fly,” “weekday versus weekend best for flights,” “cheapest day of the week to fly…”
Then, we can group these together and decide, “Hey, you know what? The volume for all of these is higher. But these ones are more important to us. They have lower difficulty. Maybe they have higher click-through rate opportunity. So we’re going to target ‘best times of the year.’ That’s going to be the content we create. Now, I’m going to wrap my keywords together into ‘the best weeks and months to book flights in 2016.'”
This kind of model, where we combine the best of these two worlds, I think is the way of the future. I don’t think it pays to stick to your old-school keyword targeting methodology, nor do I think it pays to ignore keyword targeting and keyword research entirely. I think we’ve got to merge these practices and come up with something smart.
How to Cluster Keywords: Tools and Techniques
So how to cluster those keywords?
The simplest and most obvious way to group keywords is to identify a frequently used common word in those strings and find all the phrases that include that word. Looking back at the initial “healthy diet” example, a separate group to look into would be all the phrases that contain a modifier “men”. That group would include strings like this:
- healthy diet plan for men
- healthy 7 day diet plan for men
- healthy liquid diet plan for men
- And many more.
All of the above topics fit nicely into one article on all kinds of diets for men.
You can identify those groups playing with your keyword lists in Excel. Here are a couple of tutorials (both of them is a living proof that the technique is nothing new):
- Discover and Track Your Long Tail Patterns with Excel (from myself from back 2007)
- Creating Keyword Opportunity Lists with Excel Custom Sort (from Kasy Allen from back 2010)
Tools that can help you with modifier-based keyword grouping:
While a very useful exercise, this keyword grouping technique is a bit outdated and limited. Search engines have gone far beyond simple keyword matching. We need to look at closely related concepts and they don’t necessarily have exactly the same terms to describe them.
Thus, this group has no keyword modifiers in common, yet it would totally make a great article:
Serpstat is a great tool that takes a different approach to keyword clustering that goes beyond word matching.
They analyze Google search engine result pages, find similar (or same) URLs ranking for different queries and based on how many results overlap for two SERPs they make important conclusions as to how related those queries are.
This way they are able to create keyword groups like this:
Of course, I would still play with Excel when analyzing keyword modifiers and groups but I would definitely use tools like this on top of that to discover more connections and related concepts, simply because a new approach lets you look at your lists slightly differently and discover new previously undiscovered content opportunities.
The Buzz Terms
What I really like about our young quickly-evolving industry is how fast we come up with new “cool” terms to describe any technique (even the one that has been around for ages, like keyword grouping).
Keyword clustering is already a more complicated term that it should be. Keyword grouping would make as much sense and it would be much easier to understand.
Yet, we call it keyword clustering (which probably help us appear much smarter when we talk to clients).
Another buzz term that has come out of this is “pillar pages” which simply means that for any keyword group you need to create an indepth resource that would link to more specific articles going more indepth on each mentioned concept within this group.
If you try to dig deeper into the topic, you’ll probably find a lot more buzz terms that have simple commonsense and most often traditional technique behind them (like pillar page = creating indepth resource on a topic).
The bottom line is that keyword grouping is a smart thing to do. There are different approaches to it, and you need to try both of them. Creating content targeting a broader concept (group) rather than a single keyword string will help you diversify your rankings and create a solid resource. Skip the buzz terms if they confuse you and get to the point, that is creating solid content rocks and keyword grouping / clustering helps do that right.

The YouTube Ads Grid: A 3-Step System to Build YouTube Ads Campaigns that Generate More Leads & Sales
Want to hit a home run on your next YouTube ads campaign?
Then you’ll need to combine the right targeting options with a great ad that’s tailor-made for each specific audience.
And in this post, you’re going to discover how to do just that.
You’ll learn how to build YouTube ads campaigns that effectively target prospects in all three phases of the buying cycle using my brand-new “YouTube Ads Grid.”
Here’s what it looks like (you can swipe a PDF download of the YouTube Ads Grid at the bottom of this post):
I’m sharing…
- What kind of targeting options to use to reach viewers in all three of these phases
- What kind of video ad to use to really speak to those viewers
…so you can maximize your conversions and sales.
But before we get into the nuts and bolts of how to use the YouTube Ads Grid, there’s one thing you have to understand first.
And that is:
Why do people go to YouTube in the first place?
This is a critical question we have to answer before we can effectively start advertising to people on YouTube…
The 4 Reasons Why People Go to YouTube
Why do people go to YouTube? What are they looking for?
Well, there’s no one right answer to that question. No single answer that will work for everyone.
After all, YouTube is a huge site with many different types of videos.
And someone who watches a video called “Peaceful Morning Yoga” is probably on YouTube for a different reason than someone watching a video called “Greatest Trick Plays in Football History.”
But when you take a close look at the videos and searches on YouTube, you realize you can start to simplify them. To categorize them.
See, when someone goes to YouTube looking for something, they’re in a moment of time. A moment of need — a moment when they want to know, do, buy, or be inspired by something.
And there are four primary “moments” that bring people to YouTube:
“I Want to Watch What I’m Into” Moments
The first reason why people go to YouTube is to keep up-to-date on content they care about.
Many people find it inspiring to follow thought leaders on topics they’re passionate about.
For example, if you’re a marketer (like me), you might follow great marketers like Gary Vaynerchuk on YouTube as a way to keep up with new marketing trends.
“I Want to Know” Moments
The second reason people go to YouTube is simply to learn. Because they want to KNOW something.
They want to explore a topic and discover more information about it.
For example, if you want to learn more about quantum physics — and who doesn’t? — whether it’s just for school or your own personal information, you could simply search YouTube for “quantum physics.”
You’ll see plenty of informational videos that break down the theory of quantum physics for curious science buffs like you.
“I Want to Do” Moments
The third reason why people go to YouTube is to DO something — to build something, create something, fix something, and so on.
In many cases, people go to YouTube because they’re looking for a how-to video that will walk them through a tutorial or demonstration showing them how to do the task in question.
For example, pretend that you’re stranded on the side of the road with a flat tire.
Bummer, I know.
And for the sake of this example, let’s pretend that you don’t know how to put on the spare tire. You’ve never done it before.
Fortunately, all you have to do is open your YouTube app and search “how to change a flat tire.”
You’ll get a quick walkthrough video that shows you exactly how to change your tire. You’ll be back behind the wheel and on your way in 15 minutes flat.
“I Want to Buy” Moments
The fourth and final reason people go to YouTube is they want to BUY something and they’re looking for information. Whether it’s…
- Reviews
- Unboxings
- Or product comparisons
…to help them make a buying decision.
For an example here, let’s say you want to buy a Bluetooth speaker… but you don’t know which brand or model to go with.
In that case, you might search for “best Bluetooth speakers” on YouTube.
You’ll see tons of comparison and review videos that will give you the opportunity to actually listen to these speakers in a side-to-side comparison.
Watching videos like this is often one of the last steps people take before they make a final purchasing decision.
(NOTE: Set up three different types of funnels using YouTube ad retargeting! This simple three-part video strategy quickly (and cheaply) turns ice-cold visitors into warm prospects and red-hot buyers. Access The YouTube Retargeting System Execution Plan now.)
How to Build YouTube Ads Campaigns Step 1: Identify Your Viewers’ Mindset & Shopping Mode
OK, you now know the four main “moments” that bring people to YouTube.
So, what should you do with that information?
The first step in the YouTube Ads Grid is to map those “moments” to your viewers’ mindset and shopping mode.
In order to do that, I’m going to compare YouTube viewers to traditional in-store shoppers. And in a brick-and-mortar store, you have three main types of shoppers:
- Window shoppers are people who are interested enough to look through the window at your products but haven’t yet come inside
- In-store shoppers are people who are inside the store and browsing through your products
- Checkout shoppers are people who are standing in line at the register because they’re ready to make a purchase
Make sense?
Great.
Now let’s see how those traditional in-store shoppers compare to people on YouTube.
(RELATED: Traffic Temperature: How To Build Real Relationships With Automated Campaigns)
Window Shoppers
Window shoppers may not be “shopping,” per se. They might just be walking by.
But they are, at the very least, INTERESTED in whatever is you offer. (Otherwise, they wouldn’t be peeping in through the window.)
In YouTube terms, these people fit into the “I Want to Watch What I’m Into” moment.
They’re not necessarily looking to make a purchase just now, but their high-interest level makes them a good group of prospective customers.
In-Store Shoppers
Unlike window shoppers, in-store shoppers are actually in your store. They’re looking around. They’re interested right now.
They might still end up leaving your store without making a purchase…
…but they’re in there for a reason. They’ve got their eye on something.
In YouTube terms, these people fit into the “I Want to Know” or “I Want to Do” moments.
They’re actively searching for something relevant to whatever it is you sell.
Checkout Shoppers
Checkout shoppers are ready to buy. It’s been decided.
If they have any uncertainty remaining, it’s not IF they should buy… but WHAT they should buy.
In YouTube terms, these people fit into the (you guessed it!) “I Want to Buy” moments.
Typically, these people are comparing two or more brands or models.
They know they want a TV, they’re just trying to decide between Panasonic or Samsung. They know they want a new mattress, they’re just trying to decide between pillow-top and memory foam.
Because they’re so close to making a purchase, these are an important group of people to get your ads in front of.
How to Build YouTube Ads Campaigns Step 2: Determine the Right Targeting Options
Now we’ve grouped your viewers into three main categories based on where they are in the typical shopping cycle.
The next thing we need to figure out is:
How do we reach people in these specific categories on YouTube?
The answer, of course, lies in the AdWords targeting options inside your campaign.
Here is how to set up your campaigns to reach people in all three shopping modes:
How to Target Window Shoppers on YouTube
To target window shoppers, you need to find people who have demonstrated a longstanding interest in a certain topic (though not necessarily a recent interest).
Here are three ways to do that using YouTube ads:
1. Use Affinity Audiences
Affinity Audiences are a lot like interest targeting — you can show your ads in front of people who have demonstrated an interest in a certain topic based on their browsing and search history.
As of this writing, there are 143 Affinity Audiences available, but more are being added all the time.
2. Use Similar Audiences
Similar audiences are a lot like Facebook lookalike audiences.
This is where you upload a customer or remarketing list to Google, and it goes out and finds people who are similar to the people on that list.
It’s another great way to discover new a new audience of people who may be interested in your content.
3. Use Custom Affinity Audiences
This is where you build your own Affinity Audience based on a combination of several different factors.
For example, you could build a custom Affinity Audience based on certain keywords and URLs that people have visited.
I’ve actually written an entire blog post on how to do this, called Google Custom Affinity Audiences: Scale Your Campaigns and Reach Converting Customers in 3 Steps.
How to Target In-Store Shoppers on YouTube
In-store shoppers may or may not know who you are… so how do you get in front of them?
Typically, you need to do some research to find out what they’re looking for and go put your ads in those places.
1. Use Keyword Targeting
What search terms are people using to research your niche or industry?
By doing a little research to create a list of relevant keywords, you can easily get your ads in front of anyone who has recently searched for these terms — be it on YouTube or Google.
The more directly relevant the keywords are to your product or service, the better.
(RELATED: How Pro Pay-Per-Click Marketers Do Keyword Research)
2. Use Placement Targeting
This targeting option allows you to place your ads on particular YouTube videos or channels.
This is another way of getting your content in front of people who have demonstrated an interest in a topic relevant to your business.
A side bonus of placement targeting is that you can show your ads on your competitors’ videos and potentially convince some of their prospects to choose you instead!
3. Use Topics Targeting
YouTube categorizes all their videos into certain topics.
And if one of these topics is relevant to you, then that makes it a great targeting option to test out in your campaigns.
How to Target Checkout Shoppers on YouTube
Checkout shoppers are in the shopping mindset, so when targeting these shoppers, your focus should be on getting in front of viewers who have demonstrated an interest in buying your product or service.
1. Use “In-Market Audiences”
In-market audiences is Google’s way of identifying people who are “in the market” for a particular product or service. This is based on a person’s online behavior and search history over the past 7-14 days.
For example, if you have been looking at hotels, flights, and car rentals, then Google will probably determine that you’ll be traveling soon — and put you in the “In-Market Audience” for travel.
Typically, these people are fairly close to making a purchase, making them a good audience to show your ads to.
(RELATED: 3 Advanced AdWords Tactics That Increase ROI)
2. Use Website Remarketing
This one is pretty self-explanatory.
By retargeting people who have already visited your site (and particularly if they have visited a product page, sales page, or checkout page), you know you’ll be targeting a warm audience that already knows who you are.
3. Use Video Remarketing
This allows you to remarket to people who have already seen your videos on YouTube.
Allowing you to get back in front of them and convince them to take the plunge and buy your product or service.
(RELATED DIGITALMARKETER TRAINING: The YouTube Retargeting System)
Combining Targeting Options
Finally, keep in mind that you can always combine these targeting options.
So, you could combine a similar audience with topics targeting to show your ads to an even more focused group of people.
How to Build YouTube Ads Campaigns Step 3: Create Effective Ads for Each Step in the Shopping Cycle
To recap, we now know the three types of shoppers — window shoppers, in-store shoppers, and checkout shoppers…
…and we know how to target those three groups on YouTube.
The final thing we need to discuss is what kind of video ad you should show people in each of these shopping categories.
Because think about it: a good salesman wouldn’t say the same thing to a person peeking in the window as they would to a person standing in the checkout line, would they?
Of course not!
If you want to convert shoppers into customers, you need to give them a message that is tailored to the SPECIFIC shopping category they’re in.
And here’s how you do that on YouTube:
How to Create YouTube Ads for Window Shoppers
When creating ads for window shoppers, you want to deliver an ATTENTION-based video.
Your goal is to really grab the viewer’s attention.
One great way to do that is to be super, super relevant.
If they’re watching a video by Gary Vaynerchuk, for example, then make your ad as relevant as possible to the content of that video.
You might even start your ad by saying:
“Look, before you watch another Gary Vaynerchuk video, here are three things you can do to really improve…”
Can you see how a pre-roll ad like that might really grab someone’s attention as they’re about to watch a Gary Vaynerchuk video?
One thing to keep in mind is that your targeting options will play a role in how relevant your ad can be.
If you’re targeting a specific channel, for example, then you can do what I just described. You can tailor your ad to that specific channel’s audience.
But if you’re targeting an Affinity Audience, on the other hand, your ad will have to be a lot more general — because, in that case, you don’t know exactly what kind of video the person is watching.
And that means you will have to have a better ad, a stronger ad, from a creative aspect.
Generally speaking, the less relevant your ad is to the video, the better it will have to be to grab the viewer’s attention.
So, how do you grab someone’s attention in a video ad?
We recommend using this two-step pattern interrupt:
- Start out by doing something different in your video, so it makes people stop and pay attention
- Then, once you have their attention, immediately give them some great advice — teach them something new
Bonus points if you can do this using a story that will make the advice more memorable.
Extra bonus points if that story connects the advice to your brand in the viewer’s mind.
How to Create YouTube Ads For In-Store Shoppers
When creating ads for in-store shoppers, always lead with ADVICE.
These people are going to YouTube and looking for information.
So, if you show them an ad with a strong call-to-action (CTA) to “BUY NOW,” that’s going to go in one ear and out the other.
They’re not looking to make a purchase (at least not yet). They’re looking for information. So give them information.
Perhaps you can give a three-step demonstration showing how your product works to solve their problem. Or maybe give them some advice on what they should do; give them a case study or an example.
Anything that will make them feel like you aren’t SELLING to them — you’re giving them really good content.
You want them to think: “That was awesome. What’s next?”
The final CTA in your video should be for them to take the next logical step with your company…
…BUT that CTA needs to be congruent with the information you just shared with them.
So, if the video was a demonstration of your product, maybe the CTA is: “Click here to learn more about this product.”
If it was a case study or example, maybe the CTA is: “Click here to see more case studies.”
A top tip here is to “future pace” the CTA. Tell the viewer what they should experience once they click the button on the video and really spell out what you’d like them to do.
Also, remember to inform the viewer of what they stand to gain if they do take action and what they stand to lose (without being a jerk) should they not take action.
How to Create YouTube Ads For Checkout Shoppers
When creating ads for checkout shoppers, the name of the game is ACTION.
You don’t need a whole lot of persuasion at this point because people already know who you are. They’re already close to making a purchase.
Instead, you want to show these people a video that’s short and sweet and moves them to take action.
If you’re targeting people who have already visited your product page or checkout page, you might want to give them some incentive to take action by offering a discount on your product or service.
Or maybe you give them a slightly different offer instead.
Your goal here is to reactivate that desire in them to take action and make their purchase NOW.
What’s Next?
Let’s say you’ve shown an ad to a window shopper.
You grabbed their attention and gave them some advice. They now know a little more about your company and have a higher opinion of your brand.
What do you do next?
The answer is right here in the YouTube Ads Grid:
Basically, people progress along this grid from left to right.
So, if you’ve shown someone an “Attention” ad, the next step should be to show them an “Advice” ad.
Once they’ve seen an “Advice” ad, show them an “Action” ad.
By following this natural shopping progression, you’ll give your viewers an easy, friction-free experience that will naturally lead them to make a purchase.

I signed up a year ago, my mother and I had created a project without basics, and this year in May, talking to a good friend of mine in these things, we stopped everything.
We took this time to put his advice into practice, the paper project works a lot.
In fact, at the end of September we got a good project on the road, with new foundations, I think the wrong one though ...
Because so far we have not had any results. My mother is blaming me when I put her all over.

Growing my YouTube channel. Just crossed 800 subs and thought it would be cool to do a 1k giveaway. Entry is open until the channel reaches 1,000 subscribers.
Since the channel is heavily skewed toward a freelance audience, the prize is freelance relevant. The same setup I used to get going on Upwork the first time.

How to Write a Bio that Convinces Readers You’re Their Personal Superhero
Writing a bio is hard.
You have to knock ’em dead with two or three dazzling sentences that show you’re a likable, credible, and accomplished expert.
When readers read your bio, they must believe you’re the answer to their prayers — the superhero they’ve been waiting for, that will swoop in and solve that big problem they’ve been dealing with.
But your bio makes you sound more like a superdweeb than a superhero, and every time you land a guest post, only a trickle of readers ends up on your site.
“What about my brilliant post?” you want to yell at your computer. “Wasn’t that enough?”
No, it wasn’t, and that’s the point.
By the time people get to your bio they’ve read your post to the end (high five for that!). You’ve earned their attention. But unless you can convince them you have more to offer them, they’re gone.
So you need to make every word count.
Luckily, I can show you a simple three-step process to do exactly that. But first, let’s look at some common bio blunders and how to avoid them.
The 6 Common Bio Blunders That Make You Look Like an Amateur (And What to Do Instead)
#1: Making It All About You
Thanks for sharing, Jill. But do I really care? Nah.
It’s confusing, I know. “Bio” is short for biography, which suggests it should be all about you. But the main purpose of your author bio is to show your audience how you can help them solve their problem with the skills you bring to the table.
So, it’s not about you, Jill. It’s about them.
What to Do Instead:
In this post, using almost the same amount of words, Ayodeji gives us just enough information about himself to tell us what he does and how he helps his audience.
It’s clear, precise, and focused on the outcome, not on Ayodeji. He uses phrases like “develop the confidence and habits,” and “make an impact and income,” which directly target the deep-rooted desires of aspiring writers. He speaks their language.
Here’s another tip: It’s usually best to write your bio in the third person, as Ayodeji has. It’s more professional.
#2: Writing a Condensed Resume, or a Laundry List of Accomplishments
Your bio is not a dumping ground for your career path and qualifications. It’s a tiny elevator pitch that’s selling you as a credible solver of your reader’s problems.
So don’t list every degree you have or talk about your first job out of school. Readers don’t really care. They only care whether or not you have the solutions they are looking for.
What to Do Instead:
Your bio should only include details about yourself that directly relate to your audience’s problem.
Think about your career, education, and skills, and then carefully select the most pertinent facts that are going to impress the audience you are writing for. Like this:
Jessi tells us the most important thing about herself (that she is a book editor), and what she can do for her audience (get their books into print), while establishing her credibility (“best-selling,” “editor-in-chief”).
Everything she mentions is designed to appeal to the audience she’s trying to reach.
#3: Sharing Irrelevant Details or Stuff You Think Your Audience Should Care About
This bio is from someone whose expertise is content marketing, although he hides it well.
Much like your degrees and career path, your audience doesn’t care about your hobbies, passions, and personal philosophies either, unless they directly impact the problem they’re trying to solve.
What to Do Instead:
As mentioned earlier, only share the details that your audience will find relevant.
If you’re mad keen on knitting and you’re writing for an arts and crafts blog, then go ahead and mention your passion. It’s relevant. But don’t tell them about your cat, unless Fluffy can knit too.
#4: Trying to Cram Too Much In
Okay, so you’ve managed to include only relevant details about yourself, so you’re safe. Right?
Not if you included too many of them.
Like this one from Jo. She’s had an impressive career, but her bio feels endless:
This is way too much information.
Writing your own bio can be hard. Sometimes you’re too close to the subject matter to realize what’s important and what can be left out. But your bio isn’t the place to share your entire life story. You need to be picky.
What to Do Instead:
With some careful pruning, the real gems hidden away in Jo’s bio can be given center stage:
Go through your bio word by word and ask yourself, “Does this bit of information make any difference to my audience?”
If the answer is no, take it out, and limit your bio to two or three sentences.
#5: Being Overly Formal (a.k.a. Boring)
If you’re anything like me, you had to read this bio more than once to get a sense of what Joe does. It’s way too formal. Most people will just glaze over this.
What to Do Instead:
Instead of using stilted words and phrases like “maximize their online real estate” and “engender business growth” Joe missed a great opportunity to make himself stand out from the crowd by creating a point of interest.
Perhaps he could have started with something like:
Do you see how that might grab a few more eyeballs, cut through the noise, and make an impact with his target audience of doctors?
#6. Being Vague (or Overly Woo-Woo)
Hands up, whoever doesn’t have a clue what this person is talking about. What does she do? How does she help solve my problem? Why should I be interested in her?
You need to avoid ambiguous phrases like “inspiration for growth” and “find their way through the dark.” These phrases might have a nice ring to them, but they mean very little to your reader. They’re too open to interpretation.
What to Do Instead:
You don’t have time to beat around the bush in your bio. Get straight to the point. Like this:
In two sentences, Cecile tells me everything I need to know about what she does and how she can help me. No fluff, no messing about, and a juicy opt-in bribe to seal the deal.

The 3-Step Process to Writing a Click-Worthy Author Bio
So now you can see where you might’ve gone wrong in the past, and you’re dying to write a new version. But how do you ensure your next bio won’t commit the same blunders?
Easy. Just follow this simple three-step process to write a bio that your ideal readers can’t resist clicking.
Step #1: Introduce Yourself with a Bang
This is where you tell the audience who you are and what makes you different (while avoiding the common blunders we’ve just discussed). You need to spark their interest and curiosity and get them to say, “Tell me more.”
Let’s start with this example from a blogger in the personal development niche.
This tells me what Sue does, but it’s rather dull and same-y in a sea full of personal development blogs. There’s nothing here to set her apart or pique our interest.
Let’s give it a twist:
That sounds a bit more interesting. Sue manages to appeal to her audience on different levels by sounding educated, professional, and personable at the same time. Describing herself as an “agony aunt” downplays the more clinical “social scientist.”
I’m curious to know more, and it certainly makes her distinctive.
But there’s another angle Sue could take:
Now, this one is more similar to the first example, but the difference is that it adds more credibility — “certified psychologist” sounds much more credible than “has a degree in,” which suggests she’s fresh out of college — but it also sets her apart more.
She has a specialty, which gives her ideas on the topic more weight than others. If you suffer from social anxiety, you’d want to listen to the expert on it, right?
Compare also:
This version goes even further in establishing Sue’s credibility. Not only has she published multiple books on the topic of social anxiety, but she’s even been featured on some well-known media channels, adding social proof to her expertise.
We’ve talked before about not delivering a laundry list of accomplishments, but if you have specific accomplishments that make you stand out, those are worth including.
Here’s an excellent bio example that both offers a point of interest and adds credibility:
Jessica doesn’t just say she’ll help you write a business plan, she mentions she has an “outside-the-box approach,” which immediately makes you curious what that approach is. Then she steps it up even more by mentioning her approach has collectively raised $50 million in financing. That’s nothing to sneeze at and creates instant credibility.
It’s an excellent bio that will absolutely pique her audience’s interest.
Step #2: Call Out Your Audience and Say How You Help Them
Remember, this isn’t about you, it’s about what you can do for your audience. So you need to define who they are and what problem of theirs (their key fear or desire) you can solve.
You should aim for both a logical and emotional connection. It’s tough, but do-able.
Let’s take Kim, a blogger in the parenting niche:
By using language most parents will relate to and zeroing in on their fears, Kim makes a strong emotional connection. At the same time, there’s no mistaking the practical (logical) solution Kim offers.
Note: Of course, Kim’s bio would be even further improved if she linked to an incentive rather than her homepage. More on that in the next step!
Here’s another example:
Jessica clarifies immediately who she helps (busy people) and how she helps them (by re-energizing them through food, yoga, and wellness strategies).
You must be absolutely clear about this. If readers can’t identify themselves in your bio and see you have the solution they’re looking for, they will move on.
Step 3: Offer an Irresistible Reason to Click
You’ve told your audience who you are, what you do, and how you can help them. You’ve impressed them with your credentials and sparked their curiosity.
They’re ready to move to second base, but they need that last push. An irresistible reason to click through to your site and sign up. You need to offer an incentive.
Take a look at this bio:
Boom! In 46 carefully curated words, Henneke tells us who she is, what she does, how she can help, and then gives us a gold-plated reason for parting with our email address.
Her free report is 16 parts, but it’s “snackable,” which makes it sound very easy to digest. And it’s for “busy people”, which shows that Henneke understands her audience. She promises results and cleverly relates this back to her own blog, Enchanting Marketing.
Unfortunately, we can’t all steal Henneke’s bio, but we can use it as a fine example of how to write our own.
Ready to Write Your Best Bio Ever?
This three-step process is simple, but it’s not easy, so give your bio the time it requires. You should brainstorm several options for each of the steps.
Bios are hard to craft, but they are also one of the most effective pieces of marketing you can create when you get it right.
Write your best bio ever and your audience will be intrigued. They’ll want to know more and they won’t be able to resist your free offer.
They’ll see you as a credible, personable problem-solver. Their problem-solver.
And they’ll click through to your site, ready and willing to hand over their email address to their new blogging superhero.
You.
