Service based website, advertising and traffic!!

Any of you know how to do advertising for an ecommerce service website? Also how to limit the advertising to a minimum but get a lot of traffic. I assume that at the beginning more advertising is needed to get first customers, or I am wrong? Does ig or facebook will work here or maybe google? Is it possible how MJ Demarco did? Just with word of mouth? Also if possible I would like to estimate monthly cost for the beginning (advertising+domain+free toll number+anything else needed)
