How do you turn IT into something fastlane?

I have a friend who's making 6 figures in IT and today we were having a discussion on how one would go about making something like that fastlane.

He said the problem with IT is that the big money is in consulting, but the problem is that you still get paid by the hour.

Anyone have any insight or thoughts?
